Kelly Harwood in his very own art studio inside Gallery 202… blood stains and all.

Have you ever walked into a place and instantly said,
“this place is special”?
Maybe it’s because of the warmth you feel.
Maybe it’s because of the nostalgia.
Maybe it’s simply the company.
No matter what the reason… it’s a place that you want to return to someday.

I recently found myself on a trip with my wife to Franklin, TN.
It was the second time in less than six months that we had visited the Nashville area.
Nashville is a special place for us.
It’s warm.
It’s unique.
It’s welcoming.

On our most recent visit there we discovered a special place
within the special place of Franklin, TN.
Gallery 202.
It’s located at 202 2nd Ave S there in downtown, Franklin.
Gallery 202 is an art gallery with 45 artists represented.
It’s amazing.
If you are ever in the Franklin area finding yourself lacking creativity…
make your way to 2o2 2nd Ave S…
your creativity will begin to flow again…
and if it doesn’t…
you will at least meet one of the nicest guys in the world…
Kelly Harwood.

When we walked into Gallery 2o2, it was a hot day… and Kelly greeted us at the door…
“Can I get you a bottle of water, it’s awfully hot out there.”
Kelly is the founder of Gallery 202.
He is an artist in every since of the word.

As Tanya and I walked in a family of three or four walked in behind us.
Kelly offered them some water too…
the man with the family said,
“That’s okay… we’re just here to see the blood stains.”

I said to Kelly, “Um, what did he just say?!?!”
That is when he informed me that the house that Gallery 2o2
is located in is a historical house with blood stains in it from the Civil War.
Then he pointed right behind us and showed us where a cannon ball had hit the floor.

Then he said some pretty devastating words….
“A lot of people just come in to see the blood stains.”

I looked at Kelly and said, “Well we came in to see the art.”
He thanked me.
But then I thought, how devastating must that be?
But after hanging out with Kelly for about 15 minutes I quickly learned….
Kelly is not devastated by the people coming in to see the blood stains.
In fact… He embraces the fact that his gallery is in a historical house,
with the slogan, “History embracing art.”

Kelly is not devastated at all… because Kelly is creating…
and he has created a place that if he can just get people in the door…
they are destined to feel the warmth.

Art is warm.
Art says, you can dream to create because you have the ability to create.
It also says, you have the ability to succeed… and the ability to fail.
But the only way that you fail…
is if you don’t create at all.

Over the course of our conversation with Kelly,
we talked about how happy people were in the Nashville area
because for the most part everyone is there creating something they love.
For some its music.
For others, like Kelly, it’s art.

But I am convinced that we were created to create…
and the reason we are so happy when we create…
is because when we create…
we are a lot like God.

Imagined by God.
Made in his image… labeled His Masterpiece.

Ephesians 2:10
For we are God’s masterpiece.
He has created us anew in Christ Jesus,
so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

So if you consider yourself and artist or not…
don’t procrastinate creating… you’ll be so much happier when you do!
