“Purity Sucks”

The t-shirt above is one that I own.
I wore it yesterday.
It receives mixed reviews when I wear it.
But never like the ones that I received yesterday.

Twice a month I go do a bible study for some kids at a group home called One Hope United.
These kids have a lot of needs.
One of the main things that they need a whole lot of is love.
I do my best to show them love.
But it’s not always easy.

These kids have gotten the bad end of the deal for most of their lives…
and for many of them it will continue for a lifetime.
These are kids of abuse… neglect… and even sex slavery.

Their stories are heartbreaking…
Their stories are real…
Their stories are raw.

That is why I do go.
I go to shine light.
To show them that they don’t have to live in darkness.

Last night… I wore my “Purity is Possible” t-shirt.
To be honest… I didn’t even think about the reviews that it would get.
The girls seemed to like it.
The guys… not so much.

One of the boys raised his hand in the middle of my “lesson”.
I called on him…
He said… “never mind… I will probably get in trouble for saying it”…
I assured him that he would not.
Then… he said it…
“Purity Sucks!”

My response was quick… it had to be.
I said… “Really… have you ever tried it?”
He said… “No”.
I said… “Then I guess you wouldn’t know… would you?”
Then I heard crickets due to the silence.

This exchange got me thinking….

Philippians 4:8-9
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

God’s Word tells us that purity is excellent and praiseworthy.
Two words that do not suck.

Purity is important to God.
That is why it needs to be important to us.

Purity hasn’t always been easy for me.
In fact… it’s a constant struggle.
But I know that because of what Jesus has done for us…
His death…
and resurrection…
Purity is possible.

Don’t procrastinate purity.

Live for today by guarding your thoughts.
Live for today by guarding your eyes.
Live for today by being pure.
