11 Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence. 12 God observed all this corruption in the world, for everyone on earth was corrupt. 13 So God said to Noah, “I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth! 14 “Build a large boat…
Have you ever felt like Noah? When you are confident that God has spoken to you and is telling you to do something so you do it… and others laugh? Maybe they don’t laugh as much as question you. Either way… you are left with that awkward feeling that no one supports you. That feeling that makes it easy to doubt God and His direction in your life.
The problem that we have today is that God does not have a literal audible voice. So many time people of all ages ask, “How do you know God is speaking and what He is saying?”
Today I want to give you 2 ways that God speaks to us. Does He speak to us in other than these 2 things? I believe yes. But how do you know? I think these two sources that I will give you today can only help in determining God’s voice in your life.
I know… I know… this is the typical church answer. The answer that is always right even in those deep Bible College courses that I took. Seriously… one of my classes in college it was an on going joke that we would always answer “Jesus”. The thing was… it was always right.
As a minister to students… I don’t always like this answer… even though it is always right. I think it’s because it’s the easy answer. However… the writer of Hebrews states right out of the gate in chapter 1 that this is the case:
1 Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. 2 And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. 3 The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.
God will never direct you in a way that goes against the nature and character of His Son… Jesus.
2. God’s Word.
God is never going to ask you to do something that goes against His word… He just won’t do it. My favorite example of this is young people and their dating relationships. So many times they feel that God wants them to date someone with the purpose of “evangelism”. My dad called this “missionary dating”. Can it work? Yes it can… I have seen it work. Is it smart? Not really.
These 2 things… God uses to speak to us. His direction will never go against either one.
The next time you state that God is leading you to do something… make sure that you measure it up to Jesus and God’s Word… if you do that… you still sense God’s direction… then OBEY. Don’t listen to everyone else.
Living for Today means listening today… then obeying today.
What crazy direction has God ever led you that has caused people to say… “hold the phone… He wants you to do what!?!?!”
